The release of Avowed in 2025 was met with much discussion among fans of the RPG genre, comparing it to more successful titles in the past and leading to unnaturally polarized opinions regarding the quality of the product itself. While many reviews sought to judge the game based on its own merits, talk surrounding Avowed was unlikely to escape the shadow of its competition. With the passage of time and a massive new update bringing it to PS5, however, the game has finally been given the chance to be seen for what it can bring to the table.
Shown off in a new anniversary update trailer and explained on Obsidian Entertainment’s website, the 2.0 version for Avowed will include a multitude of new features. The first of these, new races, will allow players to choose Dwarves, Orlans, and Aumaua during character creation which can affect stats. In addition, any existing character can be changed to a new race through a special mirror added in the update. Another new feature is the quarterstaff weapon type, which combines close quarters combat with magic.
In addition to new gameplay features to explore, players will also now have access to numerous customization options in Avowed. The first of these, the new photo mode, lets players shift the camera to capture action moments with the update’s improved lighting. Players will also have access to difficulty options, letting them customize things like damage, carry capacity, and health independently. These features will be important as players can now engage in New Game Plus, letting them build up powerful characters over the course of more and more challenging playthroughs.
Despite having already received updates throughout the previous year, the latest anniversary content is by far the largest update Avowed has received since its launch. Gamers with a PS5 who are curious about the game will be jumping in at its best yet, potentially leading to a second wind.
