After its first announcement in 2017, Ubisoft has finally confirmed that the free-roaming Avatar game (modeled after the popular movie by James Cameron) is still in the works. It will be developed by The Division studio and a new Ubisoft studio called Ubisoft Stockholm. Last August, Ubisoft announced that Battlefield producer Patrick Bach is set to lead the development team for this game.

In a recent interview with Screenrant and producer Jesper Karabanov, he confirmed that the game is still being developed, but he cannot talk that much about it past that.
Back in 2017, Ubisoft confirmed that the Avatar game and The Division 2 will have two different teams working on them, just to calm fans down that would be worried if one game would overshadow the other. In Ubisoft’s words,
Avatar is a new project with its own dedicated team and Massive is currently recruiting top talent to work on it. Avatar’s development has no impact on the team working on The Division or on our plans to continually support and update the game and brand for the long term. We’re proud of what the team has accomplished with The Division, thankful for our community’s dedication, and looking forward to sharing more about what’s coming next for the game very soon.
Despite all of the confirmation for the upcoming game, it will not be released until 2021, which is also a year later the long-awaited sequel Avatar 2 is supposed to hit theaters in December 2020. Ubisoft has also hinted at five more big games coming out in late 2020 and early 2021.
Almost nothing is known about the new Avatar game, except for the fact that it will be available on PC and consoles. Different speculations about the gameplay have started to arise for fans, especially because Ubisoft’s two adaptations of South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole have been widely enjoyed by fans.
Ubisoft’s first Avatar game was released in December 2009, along with Cameron’s hit movie. The other Avatar sequels are set to come out in 2023, 2025, and 2027.
