Many fans were disappointed last week when the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla ‘gameplay’ trailer didn’t end up showing any gameplay. Granted the game is still over half year away, but when you put gameplay in the title, people generally expect to see some gameplay. More interesting information has leaked about the game that could re-capture the attention of fans, however. The season pass description for the game has been posted on the German Ubisoft store, and it includes some information about a few of the DLC missions.
The description for one mission reads “The Legend of Beowulf. Discover the cruel truth behind the legend.” While this is likely just a one-off mission that won’t amount to much, as is common in the early DLC missions for Assassin’s Creed games, it provides a hint on what kinds of mythical elements will be involved in the game. Based on the fact that Eivor is a Viking, and that mythology has been heavily tied to recent AC games, it is essentially a given that Norse Mythology will be heavily involved, but it is cool to see that British legends will also be addressed, as the game is not simply about the Norse, but about their interaction with and integration into Britain.
Beowulf is an Old English epic poem that follows the titular hero as he battles a monster and saves a kingdom. Ubisoft’s description of the mission hints that Eivor will discover something about Beowulf that will paint the story in a different light.
Another bonus mission is “Way of the Berserker” which will be a pre-order exclusive. Ubisoft also recently announced that Valhalla will be smaller and shorter than Odyssey, but in a meaningful way to address the issues that many had about Odyssey being bloated with empty repetitive areas and pointless side missions. Therefore, expect Valhalla to be a somewhat shorter playthrough, but one that is hopefully more fulfilling.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla releases on PC, Xbox, Playstation, and Stadia this winter.
