Well, here’s another Tekken 7 DLC alumni making his way to Tekken 8 also through DLC. Make way for the Armor King!
Good ol’ AK is sporting a new design, he’s much spikier than he’s ever been before, while also bringing a few new tricks to the table such as a poison mist counter and, well, the ability to light himself on fire. True to his wrestling homage he’s got some iconic wrestling moves like the Stone Cold Stunner and AJ Styles’ flip DDT. He also has most of his classic iconic moves like the lariat, giant swing, running powerbomb, running slam, and the shining wizard and the piledriver. His Rage Art is a Burning Hammer, which is a legendary move in Japanese wrestling and a nice reference.
The ability to light himself on fire seems to be a self buff and changes the properties on some of his strikes, and likely makes him scarier in the midrange, especially considering how aggressive Tekken 8 is.
But Armor King wasn’t the only reveal today, we also got a short tease for the next stage, which will be in Madagascar, as well as a new character hailing from there: Miary Zo. We’ve only seen a glimpse of her but hey, at least she’s a DLC character who wasn’t also DLC in Tekken 7. In fact, she’s a brand new face and the first fighting in the series to hail from Madagascar. Madagascar does have a fighting style unique to it in the form of Moraingy, and Miary Zo’s clothing seems to suggest this is how she’ll fight, but we won’t know for certain until her character trailer.
Tekken 8 still has some well documented issues that many players will be quick to point out to you, notably around balancing. And Armor King won’t be showing up for Tekken 8 until… October 16th, which is quite late. Hopefully Bandai Namco are taking the time between character releases to address all the complaints the community has about the gameplay.
