Apex Legend’s First New Character, Octane, Announced

The long wait is finally over for fans of Apex Legends. The first character to be added to the game outside the original eight was announced today, and he’s a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Octane, a high-speed hero was announced earlier today via the Apex Legends website, along with information on Season 1, called Wild Frontier, featuring brand new content. The new character, along with Season 1, will be available tomorrow March 19.

The newest addition to the Legends lineup has an unusual backstory. Apparently, Octane had lost both his legs during a record-setting gauntlet speed run and had them replaced with metallic replacements, according to a PlayStation blog post about the release. Without missing a beat, Octane decided his death-defying tactics would be a good fit in the Apex Arena and aims to be the next Apex Champion.

As for Octane’s ability kit, according to the same blog post, he is a character that can sacrifice his own health for a speed boost with an ability called Adrenaline Junkie. The post also claims that he has “an endless supply of Stim health regeneration [which] means he’s always ready for action.” Octane can also summon a launch pad with his ultimate ability, sending him and his teammates souring through the air for a quick escape or daring surprise assault. According to a Tweet by Jay Frechette, Community Manager at Respawn, Octane will be unlocked via Legend Tokens similar to Mirage and Caustic, or with 750 Apex Coins.

Season 1 Wild Frontier will also bring a host of new goodies and unlocks, most easily with a Battle Pass, which can be purchased for 950 Apex Coins. The Battle Pass will immediately grant players the Wild Frontier skins for Lifeline, Wraith, and Mirage. Players can also spend 2,800 Apex Coins to get the Battle Pass Bundle. The Battle Pass Bundle will instantly progress players through their first 25 levels for Season 1. Even those who don’t snag a Battle Pass will still unlock a Wild Frontier Legend skin, five Apex Packs, and 18 Wild Frontier stat trackers just for playing.
