It looks like Bioware’s Anthem is going to cease operating come next year on January 12, 2026.

Anthem came and went in 2019 and nobody really noticed, the strengths of Bioware tend to lie in more story based video games (though even that strength has waned) so the decision to put them behind a multiplayer online only shooter based team game was met with skepticism to say the least. Lo and behold Anthem released to middling reviews and the gaming world met it with a collective shrug before forgetting its existence. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if most of you were shocked to hear that Anthem was still active in the first place.
But that’s the reality of these GaaS games, with constant online functionality and an effort to trickle some sales from the playerbase over time, when the game fails to make a ripple let alone a splash like Anthem all those plans and assets made for years down the road just evaporate. A similar, more highly publicized case happened earlier this year with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but with that game a lot of factors led to the gaming community celebrating its death, since people don’t really have an opinion on Anthem the news of its death has led to a light shining on other aspects.
If you’ve been paying attention to gaming news, you’d know that Stop Killing Games has become quite the movement this month. A petition to prevent companies from being allowed to just shut off games at a whim, including live service games. Yeah, nobody is going to mourn Suicide Squad or Anthem, but what about 5 years down the road when Sony decides to shut off, say, Helldivers 2? The announcement of Anthem’s demise is quite timely, as it serves exactly as an example of what the movement represents, so at least in death Anthem serves a purpose it couldn’t in life.
