It looks like the popular suspense horror video game, Alan Wake, has been given a new lease on life. Remedy Entertainment recently announced that they have entered into a partnership with writer, Peter Calloway, who is known for shows such as Cloak and Dagger, and Legion, to produce TV show on the game. Remedy Entertainment’s Creative Director, Sam Lake, will serve as the Executive Producer, and the company will allegedly collaborate with Contradiction Films on the production.
Alan Wake was presented as a TV series in between gameplay segments, so it doesn’t seem like such a far fetched idea to make the game into a TV series. The development is still in the early stages, and Calloway will begin to pitch for a pilot sometime in October, therefore it might take a while before this project gets off the ground. Alan Wake was originally released in 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PC, and became a surprise success for Remedy, as it broke conventions with its unique take on psychological horror and the third person action shooing perspective.
The game received two expansions, Special One: The Signal, and Special Two: The Writer, which continued the story once the main game was completed. There was also a spinoff title, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, which took some of the suspense out and replaced it with the standard horror tropes. Although there were hopes for proper sequel, it never materialized, as Remedy moved on from the franchise to develop Quantum Break, which released in 2016, and the upcoming Control,which is due for release in 2019.
Alan Wake is still beloved by gamers to this day, and although this may not be exactly what they were looking for with new content, it’s obvious that Remedy is focusing on new games as opposed to revisiting older ones. Let’s hope that the TV adaptation lives up to the name.
