Amid Struggles for Madmind Studio, the Release of Agony Unrated Has Been Canceled

Developer Madmind Studio has recently announced that—for a second time—the uncensored version of first-person horror survival game Agony has been canceled. For Agony‘s original release in May, some content had to be cut from the already ultra-violent game to avoid an Adults Only rating. Madmind resolved to deliver a PC-only patch for the game so that players could have a full, uncensored version of the game, before this was first canned due to unspecified legal issues. After a change in Steam policies, Agony Unrated was back on; now, the studio has canceled it once more. This time, the cause is cited as both financial and legal in nature.

“We regret to inform you that our company is currently struggling with financial problems,” Madmind wrote in post on Steam. “Due to technical and legal reasons, Madmind must cancel the development of Agony Unrated. Part of the team will continue to support Agony on Steam and consoles by publishing new patches.”

The studio’s financial problems aren’t entirely surprising, given the mixed reviews Agony received upon release. It’s looking like this second cancellation is permanent; fans of the game may have to wait to find out what Madmind plans to do instead. Nevertheless, as mentioned in Madmind’s statement, support for the current Agony is still ongoing. The game will be getting a patch across all of its platforms later this week. “It will introduce many fixes and a highly refined lighting system,” the developer added.

Agony is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
