AMD Claims Half of the High-End CPU Market

The first financial quarter of 2020 is over. In preparation for the next quarter, AMD held a conference call with their investors. The company participants: Dr. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, Devinder Kumar – Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Treasurer, and Ruth Cotter – Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Human Resources, and Investor Relations remarked about the phenomenal growth of the company. While revenue went down 16% from the prior quarter, which the COVID-19 outbreak has been blamed, annual revenue went up 40% to a total of $1.79 billion.

In desktop, overall demand for our latest Ryzen 3000 and prior generation Ryzen 2000 processor families were strong, both of which continue to top retailer bestseller lists and have more than 50% share of premium processor sales at many top global e-tailers.

Dr. Lisa Su commented on how the demand for high-performance PCs across the world is extremely high offsetting the dip in the Chinese market due to COVID-19. Every area of AMD’s product line has had increased growth. This makes the 10th consecutive quarter that AMD’s client base has grown or 30 months. In addition to large growth in top tier processor, both mobile processors, mobile GPUs, and dedicated graphics have increased by double digits.

Dr. Lisa Su noted that in test runs the demand for mobile 4th generation CPUs is extremely high. She expects continued growth as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other OEMs are launching more laptops powered with AMD’s processors over the upcoming quarters. AMD expects profits to exceptionally grow in later quarters when Sony and Microsoft launch PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X during the holidays. The new consoles will be powered with custom-tailored CPUs and GPUs from AMD.

AMD is also experiencing large growth in HPC markets, chipping away at Intel’s old client base with their AMD EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs taking over in popularity. EPYC CPUs and Radeon Instinct GPUs will power Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories’s El Capitan supercomputer when it launches in 2023, which is expected to have more than 2 exaflops of computing power. Dr. Lisa Su finalized with AMD still being on track to launch Zen 3 CPUs and RDNA to GPUs in late 2020, to expected large demand and constant growth.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
