If you remember the vivid experience of wandering out of that ocean view hotel for the first time in Vice City as a passing car blared Flock of Seagulls, then you won’t ask why anyone might want to play a decade-old Grand Theft Auto title.
A modder is in the process of moving Vice City into Rockstar’s RAGE engine (not to be confused with the lackluster id post-apocalypse FPS Rage), which is the engine that powers GTA IV. An extensive HD demo shows Tommy Vercetti driving around the familiar locales of Vice City– and unless you’ve seen the original Vice City game recently, you may not appreciate how good the game looks. Of course, the assets are still old-school, and the sometimes freaky AI driving is present, but the lighting looks great at least.
There’s no word on when it will be released, but it appears clear that while much has been accomplished, there’s a lot left to do.
