Amazon Game Studios has been at work releasing new titles for their platform. A few games to mention that are in development by the team are Crucible, New World, and now, a new Lord of the Rings MMO. Amazon’s games seem to move along slowly in the development phase. The Crucible and New World were announced back in 2016 and are still not completed. What is even more concerning are the recent layoffs Amazon Game Studios underwent may even further slow the progress of development of old and newly revealed titles. Although, the idea of a new Lord of the Rings MMO sounds like a fun idea, there is still no word how long it may be before any finished product is seen. Thankfully, with the help of another developer, this title might roll out seamlessly.
It was actually announced last year that the MMO was in development by Athlon Games. Athlon said they were working on the game with a “partner developer” which we now know is Amazon Game Studios. Although being a fresh face in the industry, Amazon Game Studio brings with it a team that includes veteran developers who’ve worked on popular MMOs such as World of Warcraft and Destiny. With the two developers linked, quick progress and a solid new MMO can be very possible.
According to Amazon Game Studios The Lord of the Rings MMO is said to take place in Tolkien’s Middle Earth. This time around, it will transpire during a time much earlier then Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. A series is also in the works, but Amazon has clarified the show and the game are being developed separately and are unrelated projects. “Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers – from the same studio developing New World – tremendous opportunity to play and create,” said Amazon Games Studios VP, Christoph Hartmann. “We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience.”
It’s good to see two developers admire each others potential and join arms to create something that would not be possible without the collaboration. The Lord of the Rings MMO has no set release at this time but will be playable on PC and consoles. Not only that, the game will also be free for all to play.
