Alleged Changes to Yosuke Hanamura’s Character in Persona 4: Revival Draws Debate Among the Persona Fanbase

If ever there was a series of video games likely to set the internet ablaze with a civil war of words between two sides of a fanbase that series would be Atlus’ highly acclaimed and ever controversial Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. In the latest shots fired in this ever ongoing fanbase war of attrition, we find ourselves looking as the Persona fanbase go back and forth over the presumed changes to the character of Yosuke Hanamura in the upcoming Persona 4 remake, Persona 4: Revival.

Here is the full article complete with an interview with producer Kazuhisa Wada and Shigenori Soejima over how the team plans to handle changes from the original Persona 4 script to its remake.

The quote concerning Yosuke being:

So at base, we haven’t really changed anything about the story or the characters’ thoughts or how they act or anything. All that’s kept the same. We are keeping that as is and we’ve just maybe changed the way that we express some of this a little bit, mostly with Yosuke really. He’s a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes. So we wanted to lighten that up and make it a little bit more fitting for the world that we live in now.

Generally for any remake, creators will want to go back and change things that they want to change or didn’t have the time to implement during the initial release, but this is different. This statement makes it seem as though this isn’t an artist’s decision to improve upon a past work, this statement makes it seem like they’re changing Yosuke’s attitude to be more palatable to a modern audience as to avoid the backlash that his character would inevitably bring.

For those unfamiliar with Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4, to say he’s emblematic of a teenager at the time would be accurate. Yosuke is very hormonal and has many moments that would be described as insensitive. The screenshots that people tend to like to show around are scenes of him being sexist, or homophobic towards a party member who, while not gay, definitely gave off a gay first impression.

As expected, the Persona fanbase is split in two as to how to approach these potential changes. One side says that this is good, as Yosuke spouting those views has no place in a modern title, while the other argues that Yosuke’s flaws are what makes him interesting as a character and addition to the cast.

Persona 4 originally released on July 10th, 2007 and is going to celebrate its 19th birthday tomorrow. We’re coming up on 20 years of discourse over the game and with Persona 4: Revival’s release date of February 27th, 2027 here’s to 20 more!
