Age of Empires 4 Announced at Gamescom 2017

Microsoft Studios announced a new addition to the Age of Empires franchise during their celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary at Gamescom 2017. Age of Empires 4 is currently being developed by Relic Entertainment, a company well-known for creating real-time strategy games like Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000. Microsoft stated in a post: “Relic Entertainment has a wealth of experience in creating high-quality RTS games, making them the ideal partner to develop Age of Empires IV.”

The Age of Empires 4 trailer features battles and conquests ranging historically from ancient Rome to colonial times and the American Revolution. The last entry in the real-time strategy series was Age of Empires 3 back in 2005. Little more information about the upcoming title has been released at this time, though Microsoft promised more information in the future at AgeOfEmpires.com.

At the same time, Microsoft announced definitive editions for the first three games in the Age of Empires series. Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is set to launch on October 19, 2017, for Windows 10 PC. The next two definitive editions are also in development and will eventually follow.

Currently, neither Relic Entertainment nor Microsoft has given Age of Empires 4 a window of time for release. As with the Definitive Editions, it will be available for Windows PC.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
