Age of Empires is one of the longest lasting RTS franchises in gaming history. It is so well liked by its fans that while Age of Empires 4 pushes the series forward, the series also takes immense care of its older titles with content decades after the game’s release. In 2019, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition was released for the 20-year anniversary of the original game, bringing with it additional civilizations and stories to play. Earlier this year, the game expanded even further by releasing on PS5. Now, the game has announced its latest additional content, the Alexander the Great campaign of the Chronicles saga.

In the video announcing the new campaign, fans are given a glimpse into what they can expect from the new content. The trailer begins with ancient art depicting the conqueror and the Macedonians he commanded as he rallies them for war. It then launches into familiar gameplay complete with clashing armies, town construction, and sieges. All of this is done with the added flair of new civilizations. The trailer introduces all three as the Macedonians, the Thracians, and the Puru, each with their own unique structures and towns. Most notably, the trailer also promises a campaign dedicated to the battles led by Alexander, one of the most successful and researched military conquests in history.

Many fans have expressed both shock and gratitude that such an old game is still receiving new content so long after it was released. Although the RTS genre has been struggling to live up to its reputation in recent years, the Age of Empires games have always held a special place in many gamers’ hearts. The failure of recent RTS games may even be what drives so many players to classics like Age of Empires 2: Definitive Addition. So long as the game continues to receive support, players will always have fresh and familiar experiences waiting for them. The end of the trailer revealed that the new content will be released to all versions of the game on October 14h.
