Developer Nekki’s action-adventure ‘Freeflow Gun Fu Combat’ game SPINE has received a new trailer announcement detailing it’s release on the Nintendo Switch 2 shared by Gematsu. The title is set to release alongside it’s PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions previously announced in August 2021. A release date has not been set for SPINE yet.

SPINE is set in a dystopian cyberpunk world where an AI regime masks its criminal underbelly. You assume the role of Redline, a street artist and fighter; your goal is to rescue your brother who has been targeted by the AI regime. The brand new trailer features a new glimpse at the title’s Hardcore mode and remaining unscathed in battles will allow you to maintain your cosmetics, like sunglasses.

Just recently  Indie Games Devel interviewed SPINE Director Dmitry Pimenov and asked about why the title had reshaped its vision from its first announcement, Pimenov responded “Ultimately, we decided to reboot the project. The shift in direction also led to a change in technology—we moved from Unity to Unreal Engine, as it offered much better visual capabilities, which was crucial for the kind of experience we wanted to create. The decision to refocus on a story-driven game rather than a service-oriented model was the most pivotal. We realized that if we truly wanted to make an impact with a new IP, we had to lean into what we do best—creating compelling content. A live ops game, by design, wouldn’t allow us to deliver the narrative depth and meaningful mechanics that we wanted. We would be constrained by the need for constant player engagement and watered-down game mechanics, which we knew wasn’t the right fit for this project.”

Introducing SPINE to the Nintendo Switch 2 may capture the attention of new owners and the no damage condition set by Hardcore mode may draw more die-hard players. It has been a sometime since SPINE’s announcement. hopefully the wait will have been worth it.
