An upcoming virtual reality experience with the titular duo, Wallace and Gromit, has just been teased at the Future Games Show Summer Showcase. The first trailer for the game Wallace and Gromit: The Grand Getaway gave the audience a glimpse of what is to come from this most recent adventure.
Wallace and Gromit: The Grand Getaway was revealed to be a virtual reality experience made specifically for Meta Quest 2. A teaser trailer reveals that the game will be an homage to the 1989 short film “A Grand Day Out” where Wallace and Gromit build a spaceship to picnic on the Moon with Wallace under the assumption that the Moon is made of cheese. The trailer for Wallace and Gromit: The Grand Getaway shows Wallace, and presumably Gromit, as they have used the same spaceship from that short film to land on a distant planet to begin their new adventure.
This latest game adaptation of the popular Aardman Animations Limited franchise is expected to launch exclusively for the Meta Quest 2 later on this year. Wallace and Gromit have not seen major video game title since March 2009 with the personal computer release of Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventure: Episode One by Telltale Games. Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Adventures was a four-part adventure title where players aided Wallace and Gromit in overcoming issues int their hometown: from mutant bees attacking the city to Wallace accidentally proposing to his neighbor.
This is not the first time the animated pair have ventured into this territory of gaming however. In 2021, Wallace and Gromit: The Big Fix Up was an augmented and mixed reality mobile release in 2021. Players helped the duo in their latest business inquiry from Spick and Spanner to fix up the city of Bristol located in England. The mobile game is currently available for free download on the App Store.
Last year, Aardman Animations Limited had a series of job listings for an unannounced game project which had audiences speculating about the announcement of a possible new gaming title from the studio. The listings stated how the game would be set in a vast open world and would launch on modern consoles like PlayStation and Xbox which fueled the rumors even more.
On top of that, Aardman Animations Limited has announced that they are currently developing a new Wallace and Gromit film to be released sometime in 2024 on Netflix. Many fans are await to hear more news about the supposed addition to the Wallace and Gromit franchise as it has not received feature film since “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” in 2005. They did appear in their own animated shorts afterwards, but the last to be made was “A Matter of Loaf and Death” back in 2008. Furthermore, Ben Whitehead confirmed that he will be returning as Wallace in the upcoming video game and film. He has voiced the inventor in many projects after the original voice actor, Peter Sallis, retired in 2010 and passed away in 2017.
