The development of EA and Hazelight Studios’ A Way Out has been mostly quiet for the past couple of months. However, over on Twitter, the game’s director, Josef Fares, has announced that the game has gone gold, signifying that development for the game has been completed. With this exciting news also came the announcement of the game’s late March release.
The co-op action game was first announced back at E3 2017, and since then, few details about the game have come out that have pleased fans. The most notable thing that was first announced with the game was its decision to be a multiplayer-only game. To circumvent the need for two people with two copies to play the game over the internet, EA and Hazelight Studios decided to require only one copy of the game for two people to play online. This would be achieved by having one owner of the game give a friend a “friend pass” that comes with each copy of the game. This will allow the game’s trial to act as the complete game so it can be played with a friend. A Way Out will also come bundled with local multiplayer, so two people can also play on the same console as well. Even though the game is strictly multiplayer, player choices and dialogue are independent from the other player, and full cutscenes will be shown to both players at the same time.
The formation of Hazelight studio and the partnership between the studio and EA started back in 2014, so the game has most likely been in development for the past four years or so. Josef Fares has been nothing but passionate about the game, and shows a similar level of passion he had when developing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. On March 23rd, players will be able to experience the passion of A Way Out on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 for $29.99.
