While the many video game characters stick to humanoid forms to make for a more intuitive experience, others take the infinite possibilities that the medium provides to give players the chance to control more unique characters, from animals to objects. As the name might suggest, Cosmic Crowbar by Dracogen Studios sees players controlling a crowbar given life. The game recently received its announcement trailer and accompanying Steam page, which includes further details about the story and gameplay.
The trailer begins with an animated cutscene depicting a liquid alien searching through a trash dump. When they come across a crowbar sticking up out of the scrap, they meld with it and become the game’s central character, bouncing down into the gameplay segment. As an action-adventure beat-em-up, Cosmic Crowbar leans into the identity of the tool by having bashing and swinging attacks in addition to moves that fling the crowbar across the screen. The tree-like enemies depicted in the trailer come in different forms, offering unique challenges and attacks for the player to account for.
Later in the trailer, new gameplay elements are folded in, including a boss battle with telegraphed attacks. Players will also be able to use the hook shape of the crowbar to platform across handles to explore. The Cosmic Crowbar itself is initially focused on understanding where it is, meeting with friendly human characters who help to unravel the narrative-heavy title. The end of the trailer sees the crowbar talking to these friends and helping them solve a puzzle by fitting mechanical pieces together.
The lively art style and animation of Cosmic Crowbar allow the seemingly mundane item to become relatable and lively. The initial trailer has already excited many players in the comment section of the YouTube video, leaving them eager for more news on the game. It is set to release on PC with no release date available at this time.
