2K Australia Studio Shutting Down

According to an initial report by Kotaku Australia, the studio behind well-received games like the Bioshock series and most recently Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is disbanding and shutting its doors.

Details behind the closure aren’t clear but information available indicate that operating costs may have been cause for 2K’s decision to shut down the studio. Sources close to the situation also informed Kotaku that at one point, a move to Melbourne was being planned with hopes to attract new talent, which allegedly caused many high-level members of the team to leave.

The Canberra-based studio, previously part of Irrational Games, was the last major AAA studio operating out of Australia. The entire studio is closing, and all staff members will unfortunately lose their jobs.

2K confirmed the impending studio closure with the following statement (via Kotaku):

We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams.  We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.
