Developer Gylee Games have released a brand new release date reveal trailer for their 2D cooperative side-scrolling beat ’em up title Ra Ra Boom. Gematsu reports that the title will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 12.
Ra Ra BOOM is set on a future Earth devastated and controlled by a rogue AI, known as Zoi, which nearly eradicated humanity. The surviving humans reside in orbital space stations, from which a squad of “ninja cheerleaders from space” is deployed to reclaim Earth. Players will assume the role of one of four ninja cheerleaders from space including Aris, a versatile fighter, Saida, a bazooka-wielding cyborg, Ren, a swift melee specialist or Vee, a tank-like character who uses a shield for both offense and defense.
In Ra Ra Boom players can participate in cooperative play with up to four players while swapping between close quarters combat and ranged. Players will utilize a lane-based system to dodge attacks, target enemies, and plan strikes for optimal damage. Players can develop each of the four existing characters through branching skill trees.
Niche Gamer met with Senior Producer on Ra Ra Boom Kim Edwards, and when asked about the title’s 90’s aesthetic she responded by saying “We really wanted to give it that Saturday morning cartoon’s feeling. It’s a couch co-op, so we really wanted to throw it back to when we really loved couch co-ops the most. So it screamed 90s.”
Gylee Games aims for Ra Ra BOOM to be a fun, nostalgic couch co-op experience, reminiscent of 90s Saturday morning cartoons. They aim to deliver a unique beat ’em up blend with shooting mechanics, with a strong narrative twist involving female empowerment, customizable characters, and all hand-drawn. If the strength of its unique elements come together, players will have something to look forward to this August.
