Nintendo has released its full-year financial report revealing that last year was the company’s most profitable year to date. Operating profits increased 82% year-on-year to $5.9 billion. Ordinary profit increased 88% to $6.2 billion. Net sales increased 34% at $16.1 billion. 28.8 million Nintendo Switch units were sold last year which brings the console’s lifetime sales to 84.59 billion. Of the 28.8 million, 14.7 million are Nintendo Switch Lite units, 8.51 of which were sold in the most recent financial year ending March 31, 2021.
Full-year software sales increased 36.8% to 230.9 million units. The lifetime sales for Nintendo Switch games are now at 587.12 million. According to Nintendo, five titles helped with the software sales increase: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and Ring Fit Adventure. 20.9 million units of Animal Crossing: New Horizons was sold which brings the lifetime sales to 32.6 million. 10.62 million copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were sold last year. 9 million units of Super Mario 3D All-Stars got sold. 4 million units of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury were sold in its first six weeks. As of now, 5.6 million units have been sold. Ring Fit Adventure got a big boost last year with the rise in indoor exercise due to the pandemic. 7.38 million units were sold last year bringing the lifetime sales of the game to 10.11 million. Since 2017, 36 titles have sold more than one million units, including third-party titles. 22 of the 36 titles are developed and published in Nintendo.
Sales of download-only titles and transactions related to Nintendo Switch Online rose 68.5% to $3.1 million. Digital accounted for 42.8% of software sales overall in 2020. Revenue in mobile rose 11.3% to $3.1 billion. Nintendo is expecting a decline this year with net sales predicted to reach $14.6 billion which will be down 9% compared to 2020.
Notable first-party titles coming soon to Nintendo Switch are Mario Golf Super Rush and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.
