1991 Platformer Another World Comes To The Switch

Nintendo is going retro for its latest release on the Switch. Another World (titled Out of this World in North America and Outer World in Japan) was originally released for the Atari over two decades ago in 1991.

For readers like me who weren’t alive for the original release, here is a basic synopsis of the game. Players take control of Lester Knight Chaykin, a young physicist visiting his lab in the midst of a thunderstorm. As he works on experiments with his particle accelerator, working to discover the origins of the universe, a lightning strike hits and causes things to go haywire. Lester finds himself teleported to an alien planet and must find a way to survive.

The game was a critical success at the time of its release and has retained a cult popularity status since then. Particularly notable were the graphics, which utilized 3D in a way that mimicked the cinematic nature of a film, something that wasn’t common at the time. It was also lauded for its compelling story and engaging mechanics.

The game has already been ported to a number of different consoles. In fact, in 2011 developer Éric Chahi announced at GDC that the game would be coming to iOS as part of its 20th Anniversary. An Android version followed the next year with the game making its way to Steam in 2013. A port of this anniversary edition was released for several current consoles in 2014.

Dotemu, the company behind this and several of the most recent ports of the game, released a teaser trailer today on Youtube to show us the newest version of this classic adventure game – a version for the Nintendo Switch.

While there is no official release date yet, the video description does say Spring 2018, which would mean we can expect it fairly soon.
