When IO Interactive announced that they were working on a new James Bond video game, everyone in the gaming community thought it was a match made in heaven, considering the developer’s success with their revamped take on Hitman. It seems like everyone agreed, as IOI and Amazon MGM Studios have announced that 007 First Light has reached 1.5 million units sold within the first 24 hours since the game launched. This makes it the IO Interactive’s fastest-selling title in its history.

As IOI notes, “the milestone of 1.5 units sold in 245 hours reflects overwhelming global enthusiasm for 007 First Light and represents a significant achievement for IO Interactive. With an 88 OpenCritic rating and 87 Metacritic score, 007 First Light has been embraced by both critics and players alike, already establishing itself as one of 2026’s most successful gaming releases. The sales recorded across all platforms underscore the game’s broad appeal and the successful execution of IO Interactive’s vision to honor Bond’s legacy in gaming.”
While this is a single-player, narrative-focused game, that doesn’t mean IO Interactive doesn’t have plans for the game after its release. In fact, similar to Hitman and its new special contracts that they release, 007 First Light will follow a similar path.
Everything will revolve around TacSim, an area/mode of the game that players gain access to during the story and allows James Bond to take on challenges that span the different levels of the game. Alongside the challenges are different rules and conditions players have to adhere to. IOI plans to utilize TacSim as a way to keep players engaged with 007 First Light. “It’s something we’ve done very successfully with Hitman,” IO chief development officer Véronique Lallier told me. “We have TacSim content that will be made available after launch, and there will be a roadmap of content.”
“Because for us, the way we see things is: launching the game is just the beginning, and it’s important for us to learn and listen to the feedback of the players and everybody and see, okay, how can we do it better? What should we do more? What should we do less? And that’s something we’ve been doing with Hitman over a decade with a World of Assassination, and we’re going to definitely try to bring more content [here].
“It’s completely different from Hitman and that’s something very important to say,” Lallier added. “Hitman is sandbox and by nature feels more open to repetition. This one is more narrative-driven, so once you’ve done the story, what else can you do? And that’s what we’re trying to do with TacSim. There is definitely a desire for us to continue to make things evolve.”
Senior Combat Designer Tom Marcham hopes to see how the speedrunning communities will engage with the game and compete in challenges. “We’re excited to see it,” he said.
007 First Light is now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will be available for Nintendo Switch 2 later this Summer.
