The Game Awards 2019 have concluded after many exciting moments celebrating the past year in gaming, along with some new announcements to look forward to, such as new games and the revelation of a new Xbox console, the Xbox Series X.
Some games did very well at the event, such as ZA/UM’s Disco Elysium, which won the four categories it received nominations for. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice took home the biggest award of the night, Game of the Year, as well as Best Action/Adventure game. Other nominees for Game of the Year included Control, Death Stranding, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Resident Evil 2, and The Outer Worlds.
Of these games, Control, Death Stranding, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still managed to win other categories. Death Stranding managed to take home three awards: Best Score/Music, Best Game Direction, and Best Performance. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won Best Fighting Game and Control won Best Art Direction.
Control received eight nominations, including Game of the Year, Best Action-Adventure Game, Best Art Direction, Best Audio Design, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Performance (Courtney Hope) and Best Performance (Matthew Porretta). Speaking on their nomination for Best Game Direction, Control game director Mikael Kasurinen said, “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized by our community of industry professionals at this years Game Awards. Sharing the spotlight with other talented developers and publishers is a true joy and we wish everyone nominated the best of luck. Control is such a special game to us and award wins set aside, we are just happy to have shared this experience with players and fans around the world.”
He continued, “Control is something new for us. From the start, we wanted to go where our passions took us and embrace the ideas that excited us. We didn’t second guess what the reception would be and we trusted that like-minded gamers out there would enjoy the same things we enjoy. We like weird and we like that our fans have enjoyed this strange and deranged stylized experience that is Control.”
