Computer and PC gaming hardware company Logitech announced their plans today to minimize its carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality, with an aim to be completely powered by renewable electricity by 2030. Logitech is best known in the gaming sector for producing mice and keyboards and recently acquired Streamlabs, a popular livestream software tool, earlier this year.

In their official statement, Logitech shares the they have officially joined with 87 other major companies on the United Nations’s 1.5 degrees Centigrade Business Initiative, which allows businesses to set trajectories to reach environmental goals within a set timeline. These initiatives are in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which were announced as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement and aim to limit global increases in temperature to under 1.5ºC by 2050.
We want to leave our mark on the future. We know that mark can be positive or negative, depending on the large and small decisions we make every day.
“For more than a decade, Logitech has actively worked to minimize our climate footprint while designing and delivering products that help better the world. As a small company playing in a global market, we appreciate the value of collaboration, and today we are publically committing to being part of global efforts to co-create a more sustainable world,” said Bracken Darrell, president and CEO of Logitech. “We recognize that Logitech’s growth does not come without an environmental impact and, while we have made progress, we have only just begun our efforts in designing for sustainability.”
“As an award-winning design company, we are making a pledge to future generations that we will use our leadership in design not only to create a great customer experience but to do so in a way that is sustainable for the planet,” Darrell added. “We want to leave our mark on the future. We know that mark can be positive or negative, depending on the large and small decisions we make every day.”
As part of their efforts to reach carbon neutrality, Logitech will be looking for ways to make their product lineup environmentally friendly by examining materials used, manufacture and design methods, distribution, and the way the brand’s peripherals are recycled. Logitech plans to review the potential environmental effects on all their products before they enter production. So far, Logitech has already implemented recyclable packaging and is using recycled plastics for products when possible.
Logitech joins other major companies in the gaming industry in looking to environmental sustainability and product design. Sony Interactive Entertainment, Microsoft, Google Stadia, and others have made voluntary commitments in September of this year as part of the UN’s Playing for the Planet Alliance.
“The video games industry has the ability to engage, inspire and captivate the imaginations of billions of people across the world. This makes them a hugely important partner in addressing the climate emergency,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director, UN Environment Programme (UNEP). “We are encouraged by the commitment of these gaming companies, which shows recognition that we all must play our role in the global effort to lower carbon emissions and effect real change towards sustainability.”
