After the recent leak of a screenshot from Red Dead Redemption 2 appeared on the Grand Theft Auto forums, fans have been speculating whether or not the screenshot is the real deal, or a Photoshoped hoax. However, some unexpected news reveals that the screenshot isn’t actually from Red Dead at all. An exclusive reveal from PC Gamer reveals that the screenshot actually comes from an upcoming western-themed MMO called Wild West Online.
The leaked screenshot of a cowboy leaning against the entrance of an old, western general store quickly got mistaken for Rockstar’s upcoming western sequel, mainly because a) there’s a cowboy in the image, and b) Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most anticipated games of this year and fans are eager to see anything new from it.
Those rumors were put to rest when PC Gamer announced the upcoming Wild West Online, an MMO that does look an awful lot like Red Dead Redemption, which is a good sign for the western MMO.
According to PC Gamer’s reveal article, Wild West Online is an open-world PvP MMO, in which players can form gangs to either break or defend the law. Players can also explore the surrounding wilderness, as well as participate in various western themed activities, such as playing cards at the saloon.
The creators of Wild West Online will be launching a $250,000 Kickstarter at the end of this month, which will be used to fund the expansion of features in the game. The development team is already working on a core version of the game which will launch sometime later this year. It appears that Wild West Online takes many notes from Red Dead Redemption’s excellent online mode. The main difference from that game is that this one’s an MMO. That means there will be a much more massive open world to play in, with hundreds of players coexisting together. Or trying to kill each other.
Either way, it should be a big hit, especially with PC gamers, since its built from the ground up specifically for PC multiplayer. Looks like 2017 is gonna be a great year for fans of open-world games and cowboys.
