Over the weekend, the latest Minecraft LIVE 2026 addressed this question by not only revealing a new biome, but also teasing the game’s first new dimension in over a decade.
The earliest feature to be expected to come to the game is the addition of a new cave biome called the ice caves. As the name implies, it trades out the usual stone of the underground for ice blocks and new ice crystals that grow in the dark. The biome’s ice shards will also react to the placement of light and heat, causing them to fall of unsuspecting players who place torches carelessly. The final challenge revealed for the ice caves are the new Frozen Zombie variants, which can inflict the freezing effect on players to slow them and throw balls of ice at range.
While the new biome would usually be enough to get fans of the game talking, the news has been mostly overshadowed by the announcement at the end of the presentation revealing that the Sift dimension from the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons 2 will be coming to the main game. The new dimension is stated to be vibrant, combat oriented, and accessed through portals in that game, leaving some to wonder which of these elements will translate over to the main title and how the dimension will fit in with the other three iconic locations of the game.
Minecraft, true to its genre, is also building itself up to be more than it used to be. Through the various updates, long-time players who took a break from the game can often return to find an experience both familiar and unique. Both the ice cave biomes and the Sift are planned to be added as free updates to Minecraft in the future.
