As much as they can be used to convey a gameplay experience, games can also be used to convey feelings in a similar way to movies and pictures. As a result, video games can also serve as a good way to adapt those works while also adding in another level of player immersion and involvement. This is the case for the upcoming game, Echoes: A Transmissions Story, developed by Hashcode Digital and published by Super Rare Originals. The team is working alongside illustrator Matt Dixon, whose artwork served as the inspiration for the game.
In the announcement trailer for Echoes: A Transmissions Story, viewers are introduced to the small robot that will serve as the main character. The robot is awoken by a voice telling it that it has a large task ahead of it, leading into a view of various sceneries in the game, including plains, forests, and beaches. The Steam page reveals that players will be called by the Creator, traveling the vast world in search of truths about their identity.
Although the announcement trailer primarily shows the robotic main character walking through the world, the game is confirmed to be an adventure platformer. Along the journey, players will have the opportunity to collect and repurpose scrap, which can be used to create tools and upgrades. Players will also have the opportunity to help others who have lingering troubles from the past world. Helping fellow robots regain their lost memories will ultimately help the player character find their purpose as well.
Given the game’s inspiration, it comes as no surprise that Echoes: A Transmissions Story centers so heavily on the story of a robot in search of answers in a whimsical world. Time will tell if the game can live up to the art that preceded it, and if its impact will change how fans of the work view its potential stories.
