The RPG mechanics in games have expanded more than almost any other since their initial introduction with turn-based combat. Many games took the leveling characters and sense of tying players into the world in a real-time direction, while others added complexity and skill expression through tactical elements. A new game in this tactical genre, Umber by Ink Studio Games, was just announced with an official trailer and Steam store page.
Like many similar games before it, Umber makes use of a grid to place characters, making terrain and positioning the most important elements in any battle. The player will take turns with the enemy attacking and repositioning. The trailer opens with a montage of the various abilities that the characters in game will be able to learn, including a ranged magic blast, a spread-out flame attack, and a monster’s move that applies a status effect on one of the heroes. Players will be able to augment their characters with over 100 abilities and enhance their equipment through a weapon-crafting system. Being unlimited by standard party constraints, the team’s size will also consist of twelve distinct fighters that boast classes with unique advantages.
The story sees players traversing a world called Evaria, which has been stripped of the magical Aether by a devastating event a long time ago. In place of magic, people used Umber ore to build advanced machinery and fueling a devastating war that the main characters, Molly and Henry, get caught up in. The trailer shows off these characters along with some of the people around the world they’ll interact with or recruit along their journey. Together, the team will travel on a customizable airship that itself can engage in battles.
Umber looks to combine the sense of progression and likeable characters from RPG games with the depth of strategy that comes with tactical games. It is set to be released on PC with the Steam Page revealing that it is “coming soon”.
