Steam has a plethora of games releasing in Quarter 3 of 2026, a number of which with demos for gamers to test and try out for themselves. One of these games is known as Grain Rot, a co-op extraction horror game created by Beck & Branch Games. The demo itself was meant to collect player feedback before the games official release in Q3, and has done so quite successfully with the sheer amount of players the demo has collected. Since the demo released on June 12th, thousands of players have began to test the game out for themselves. As of June 15th, 60,000 people downloaded the demo, and as of June 20th, nearly 100,000 have added it onto their wishlist, both numbers having increased since then.
The game revolves around you (and friends) exploring underground ruins and collecting objects to build up your home base and collect upgrades and NPCs. Players play as small balls of light called “Living Sparks”, that pilot wooden vessels that are easily destructible and interact with the environment. Many challenges and difficulties can arise when on these expeditions into ruins. Hazards, enemies, something known as “Rot” which warps and shifts player characters as a whole, and even your own friends can get in your way as you try to extract with the loot you’ve collected.
Grain Rot is on course to release during Q3 of 2026, and from the stats alone, many players seem to be looking forward to its release. While there have been many games within the horror-extraction genre, Grain Rot may have the potential to stand alongside the big names within that genre. Between the decorative aspect that comes with the loot players will acquire, and the rather original gameplay mechanic of taking over other wooden vessels as a Living Spark, the game certainly has what it needs to be a breath of fresh air within the extraction genre.
