The MMORPG genre isn’t the titan it once was when most people were playing these types of games on their PCs for hours on end. However, that doesn’t mean the genre is struggling. Behemoths like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV are still going strong, and we ever got a Guild Wars 3 announcement at the Summer Game Fest showcase. Now, the first “life eater,” as someone I know called it, and the first highly successful 3D MMORPG is returning with EverQuest Legends. At Summer Game Fest, we got to see the game in action, and it looks and feels like we were taken back to the turn of the millennium.
EverQuest Legends is a reimagining of the original game when it first released in 1999. It makes sense as the dev team is made up of developers who started out doing EverQuest emulators, and now they’ve been brought in to bring the classic MMORPG to the modern age. That doesn’t mean the game is completely different to be like the modern MMORPGs. On the contrary, the game is still the 1999 original just with a ton of quality of life improvements.
The developers want EverQuest Legends to appeal to the casual and solo players instead of just hardcore EverQuest fans. They want anyone who picks up the game to be able to experience the world. However, that doesn’t mean players will just be able to breeze through the game and get alll the highest level gear as soon as they start the game. The character and their equipped gear that the developer used while playing was said could take a year or more to get in game if you play at a regular pace.
There are loads of quality of life updates in EverQuest Legends. These include the ability to quickly buff yourself, that even extends to your group, as well as a quick revive system to immediately jump back into the game. You can even take on raids by yourself now. Raids also have a difficulty modifier from 0-4 which will give out different gear rewards depending on which difficulty was chosen. Players are also able to multiclass in the game. Up to three different classes can be chosen, and with 15 different races, including the original Froglock which wasn’t playable way back when, this will give 560 total different combinations players can make to build their characters.

EverQuest Legends is set to launch on PC next month on July 28, 2026. Preorders are available starting today. By preordering, you will get few perks such as being able to reserve your name in the game as well as getting the “Legend” title in game.
