Horror can take many different forms for many individuals. One of the most prevalent fears is the idea that something is slightly off or that something seemingly innocent has been twisted into something sinister. This feeling is at the forefront of the new game, The Pines, by Studio Abattoir. The upcoming RPG has just been announced with a trailer that explores the main character’s introduction to the game’s setting.
The announcement trailer begins with the main character, Edward Walker, arriving in a place called The Pines, a seemingly simple town with a strange community. He is greeted by an old man, who offers him a chance in the town to escape his feelings of worthlessness after his life as an investigator. The town itself shows incredible contrast, with the large welcome sign at the front leading into a town with barely any people out and about. Those the main character does encounter have a strange smile on their faces.
In addition to heavy story content, the game will also feature a combat system. According to the Steam page, combat will focus primarily on tools, with ammunition being a rare resource. The sinister undertone of the town is called into further question as the main character meets individuals talking about a conspiracy after being ostracized. How the player interacts with individuals like this one will ultimately shape the story due to the Stalker System, which can turn innocent civilians into hunters that go after the player. The trailer ends with the old man assuring Walker that he will fit in at the Pines, only adding to the mystique of the area.
The understated nature of psychological horror makes it ideal for story-driven games like RPGs. The Pines seems to be weaving a mystery that will culminate in a major mental toll on both Walker and the player. The game will be playable on Steam and is stated to be coming soon.
