Several reports have come out following the release of God of War: Sons of Sparta and the announcement of the God of War trilogy remake regarding what’s next for developer Sony Santa Monica. a writer from the developer claims that they spent five years up to last September helping “shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe, developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP.” Bloomberg’s Jason Screier also reported the same, saying that PlayStation at one point intended to ““support several [God of War] sequels and spinoffs, like its own smaller version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Notorious leaker NateTheHate has said that the next game will focus and center on the character of Faye, Atreus’ mother, something that IGN has corroborated and understands to be accurate.

“Yes, the game is set within the God of War universe & the lead character will be Fay,” wrote NatetheHate, who has a decent track record with leaking video game-related project information. “Current plan: Reveal this year/release first half 2027 — barring any delay.”

There is speculation that this is the project that Sony Santa Monica Creative Director Cory Barlog is working on. He has been with the franchise since its inception, as the Lead Animator in God of War (2005), the director of God of War II and God of War III for the first 8 months of the third game’s development. He left the studio and returned serving as the Creative Director and directing God of War (2018). He helped produce God of War Ragnarok. 

Last month, actor Christopher Judge, who has played Kratos in 2018 and Ragnarok said that the next game would be announced this Summer but we’ll have to wait and see.
