Retro game fans, arcade enthusiasts, and collectors got some bad news over the weekend. There are reports that Arcade 1Up, one of the companies keeping arcade machines alive, is shutting down and ceasing operations. The news comes from an email sent out to employees, relaying the announcement.

“Beta Team, I come to you with news I wish I didn’t have to share,” the email reads. “Arcade 1Up is closing operations. For the majority of us, our last day is coming Friday. I cannot speak to the future of the brand, it is not my place to share what might be next and whom will be in charge of it. I do not know the plans for the arcade systems or the Infinity Tables. I believe they will continue to operate as they currently do, but I do not know for certain.”
No official statement has been released yet but many may be wondering what will happen to future support for its cabinets with firmware updates and online play.
Those worried may be able to relax. Two years ago, Code Mystics talked about how they built a fallback mode into the games they worked on.
“We built a fallback mode into our Gemini online code from the start that will allow online multiplayer without a server. Machines that use Gemini (NBA Jam, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, X-Men, and NFL Blitz) will be able to play online even if the servers are sunset.”
Arcade 1Up was founded back in 2018 as a subsidiary of Tastemakers where they made a name for themselves creating 3/4-scale versions of arcade cabinets.
They released cabinets for a number of fighting games including Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs. Capcom though their full library extends pretty far beyond that.
Arcade1Up had sold over 3 million units as of 2022.
