The latest installment in the shock-humor filled shooter series Postal, titled Postal: Bullet Paradise, was announced on December 3rd. The following day, the game’s publisher, Running with Scissors (RWS), announced the game’s cancellation. Said cancellation was the result of fan backlash due to alleged generative AI (AI) assets being used in the game’s reveal trailer. Goonswarm Games, the developer behind Postal: Bullet Paradise, has shut down due to the game’s cancellation. Despite initially denying the AI allegations, Goonswarm has since confirmed the usage of AI in the promotional material for Postal: Bullet Paradise.
On December 3rd, Postal: Bullet Paradise was announced with a corresponding reveal trailer uploaded to YouTube. Unfortunately, it seems that the officially uploaded trailer has since been removed, in addition to the Postal: Bullet Paradise’s section on Running with Scissors’ website being taken down. However, the trailer can be watched via the game’s Steam Page.

It was certain assets used in the game’s reveal trailer that set off AI-related alarm bells for loyal Postal fans. On the Postal subreddit, one fan commented that the pixel art was AI generated due to errors with shading, pixel quality, and the character’s mouths. Promotional material for the game was also called into question. Some character’s designs deviated strangely from their previous in-game appearances, in addition to a lack of separation between a character’s clothes and hair.
After revealing POSTAL: Bullet Paradise, a title Running With Scissors was planning on publishing but not developing, we’ve been overwhelmed with negative responses from our concerned POSTAL Community. The strong feedback from them is that elements of the game are very likely…

After allegations of AI use started to ramp up, RWS promised to investigate the claims as Goonswarm denied the allegations when speaking to PCGamesN. However, due to the sheer volume of complaints, RWS officially cancelled the game. The company posted on X that the potential implementation of AI assets had “caused extreme damage to our brand and our company reputation.” As a result, they cancelled the game due to their “trust in the development team [being] broken.”

After the game’s cancellation, Goonswarm posted on X that the AI allegations led to “a large number of threats, insults, and mockery,” which pushed them to completely shut down the studio. In the initial post, they maintained their stance that the AI allegations were false, and that the studio was caught in a “AI war by accident.”

A day later, however, Goonswarm posted that an internal investigation revealed that some of the promotional material had been generated using AI. Goonswarm apologized for reacting “emotionally and defensively,” claiming that the artwork had initially appeared legitimate and they wanted to protect their team from seemingly false allegations. To account for their mistake, the company has vowed to replace the AI generated promotional material with artwork made by real artists. However, Goonswarm maintained their stance that all in-game assets, such as the ones shown in the reveal trailer, were made by humans.
Due to the cancellation of Postal: Bullet Paradise, it is currently unclear what project RWS will release next.
