Bonus Stage Publishing and developer Rock Pocket Games have recently announced that their 2.5D side-scrolling metroidvania Somber Echoes will launch on PC January 21.
Somber Echoes takes place on Atrimotos, an abandoned spaceship following a cataclysmic event, now infested with beings from another dimension. You will assume the role of Adestria, solely tasked with preventing her twin sister Harmonia from unraveling the universe.
In an interview done by Bonus Stage Publishing, developer Rock Pocket Games director Vangelis shares about the games creative inspirations “So first of all, the whole idea and inspiration for the game came about from mixing together two things you don’t usually see mixed in games which is the Sci Fi genre with a classical ancient Greek Roman civilization vibe and it was quite a challenge to bring those two things together mainly because no one has done it to this sort of style or level before, so references and inspiration was not very easy to come by so we had to sort of come up with things as we went along and see what works and what doesn’t so it was a lot of work being put into that and a lot of discussions, problem solving and making something that looks visually appealing but also works in the gameplay sense and is kind of unique and interesting and all that of course…”
Gematsu reports Somber Echoes features seven districts within Atrimotos; new abilities will grant you access to these locations. Ultrawide aspect ratio is supported in this release.
Somber Echoes is a unique metroidvania in how its story also mirrors Greek tragedies and Mythos while setting itself is in a Science Fiction world. Players will be able to see if this is enough to set itself apart in just a couple short weeks. With a passionate development team behind it, they may just hit the mark.
