For those who were potentially looking forward to another installment with the Final Fantasy XVI title, we have some unfortunate news for you. Square Enix Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi P, stated in an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu that neither he nor anyone involved with the project are “not expecting to make a sequel or spin-off.” According to Yoshi-P, most of the core development team has already moved onto other projects, other than those who stayed on to assist with the DLC. In other words, it appears that unless Yoshi-P and company recoup for an addition release, this might be some of the last pieces of content to come out for Final Fantasy XVI.
Don’t expect a Final Fantasy 16 sequel or spin-off, says Yoshi-P

Yoshi-P says that he and the development team “accumulated a lot of knowledge” when creating the massive world of Final Fantasy XVI. Yoshi-P also added that with this new knowledge, the team would prefer to “work on the next title or consider a new challenge” rather than add to Final Fantasy 16 “forever.” However, Yoshi-P also states that he isn’t sure what will happen with the IP in general, meaning that someone else could potentially come in and take up the new sequel/spin off from the same world. “If you ask me if there will be anything related to FF16 in the future, I don’t know. Since I don’t know what will happen, I’d rather not say anything definite.”
As we mentioned earlier, Square Enix shadow dropped some DLC for Final Fantasy XVI at the end of last week, namely during The Game Awards 2023. This new content includes a new plot, weapons, battles, and increases the level cap. Square Enix is also working on The Rising Tide DLC, which is set to launch next year, which will see main protagonist Clive fight the famous summon Leviathan. After that, and just as Yoshi-P says, it’s anyone’s guess. However, considering that it looks like most of the main developers are already on new projects, it’s more than likely safe assume that we won’t see any new pieces of content for Final Fantasy XVI, or a sequel/spin off released.
