Star Wars: Outlaws premiered 10 minutes of direct gameplay footage today during Ubisoft Forward. Announced just yesterday during the Xbox Games Showcase with a cinematic trailer, todays trailer gave us more of what to expect in the first-ever open world Star Wars game. 

Players will step into the role of Kay Vess, which as the description describes her, “an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.” Set between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, players will explore familiar and entirely new planets, risking arrest from the Galactic Empire, all while seeking a new life of freedom. 

Gameplay footage started with Kay and her companion Nix sneaking out of a facility only to end up being caught. Soon Kay is blasting away at enemies, and Nix uses his abilities to aid Kay in combat. Once the two escaped, did we get to see what an open world Star Wars game would truly look like. Kay rides on her speeder across dirt roads with sprawling landscapes around her, all while being chased still by the enemies firing behind her. At one point during the chase Kay uses one of her abilities to go slow mo and targets the enemies and blasting them off the road. 

The trailer continues in the open world environment as they head into the small settlement of Jaunta’s Hope. Kay enters a bar where it then naturally transitions to a lengthy cutscene. During this cutscene, Kay is given a choice to make, which players can then choose what Kay should say next. 

Gameplay footage followed Kay into her ship as they left the planet and headed off into outerspace— without any loading screens whatsoever of course. Space will also be another open area of combat for players, as the trailer showed Kay’s ship in battle with fighter pilots targeting her. 

Other aspects of gameplay that wasn’t directly shown in the trailer will let players seek out missions or secret locations, in search of valuable rewards. A reputation system will also be incorporated, where specific actions, and choices Kay makes will influence further gameplay.

While the trailer was only 10 minutes — a mix of gameplay and cutscenes— Star Wars: Outlaws already looks like it’s shaping up to be a major game as it nears closer to release. It’s currently only slated for release in 2024, nothing solid yet— and hopefully no social media apology note of a delay. From the graphics, to the aesthetics, and overall atmosphere, Outlaws has set the bar high for what next is still be revealed.
