Wolverine Review

Heroes come in different shapes and sizes. Some are normal people who put their lives on the line to do what’s right and some who actually have special gifts like super powers. Even the most savage and hotheaded people can be heroes, just like Logan. Wolverine is an action-adventure game where you play as Wolverine working on saving mutantkind from anti-mutant corporations trying to exterminate all mutants. This game has many twists and turns, brutal gameplay, and tons of little details for fans.

When the game starts you’re thrown right into battle on a mission to rescue an old friend. The game does a good job showing you how to play and the best way to use your claws. While you don’t have any ulterior ways to fight besides your claws, that is all you need. The combat is brutal and is the perfect example of how Wolverine fights. If it is too gruesome for you, you’re in luck since you can turn it off in the settings so you get all the action with none of the gore. You can also change the difficulty like most games, but unlike other games, Wolverine has a difficulty that makes it so it is impossible to die. In my opinion this was not necessary because it takes away from the experience from the game since when you start, the difficulty is defaulted to this and can make you think this game is too easy.

Even on the normal easy difficulty, this game is a challenge. The very first boss took me a few tries before I could defeat him but the battle itself was a fun challenge. I felt so satisfied when I drove my claws into him and finished him off after how long it took me to take him down. While the bosses are few and are really stretched out through the story, they all give a fun challenge and really put your skills to the test. From Omega Red to the Sentinels, every boss is a love letter to fans with how accurate they are.

As you play through the game you will find different collectibles to improve your skills. You can find whisky bottles that will grant you points that will upgrade your non combat abilities, such as more defense, letting you use instant kill moves on tougher enemies and much more. You can also find nightmare doors in levels that will give you challenges, such as kill a certain enemy or reach the end of the level in a certain time limit. These challenges will also grant you points to upgrade your non combat abilities. You can also find crates that have nano bots which can be used to make new costumes for Wolverine. While most of them don’t look the greatest, if you unlock enough of these suits then you can upgrade your health which will be necessary during future levels.

You can also upgrade your combat abilities by leveling up in combat or finding exp boxes in levels. You can upgrade your combo finishers, unlock more special moves and new abilities to help with shredding your enemies. At first this might seem like a lot to keep track of, if you hang on to it really fast.

While this game is linear, the levels are big and it is easy to get turned around. This game does however have many ways to help you get back on track. There is the obvious cursor that you activate to show you the general direction of your next objective. Then there are white spots that show you where you can jump to and from and even what you can climb on. And during certain points in levels when Wolverine uses his sense ability you will see a blue trail leading you to your objective. The scent trail however only lasts for a short bit so it doesn’t overstay its welcome. While this seems to be a lot of hand holding, it’s really necessary and isn’t really a deal breaker for me. A most recent update even allows you to adjust the scent trail so it’s not that obvious if it’s a problem for you.

In conclusion, Wolverine is a fun experience for fans and non fans. Early reviews do not do this game justice. This is an example of a game you need to play for yourself and make your own opinion. From brutal combat, fun challenges, and a world that shows the unfair treatment of mutants. This is the definitive way to show how Wolverine is the hero mutants need.
