Marvel Rivals Review

Have you ever wanted two or more of your heroes/villains to work together? How would you  imagine they would interact? While that won’t be happening in the cinemas anytime soon, there are always video games to help you realize your fantasy. Marvel Rivals is a free to play, third person team based shooter, where you face off in a 6v6 match against players around the world. You have an array of different, well known Marvel heroes and villains, to play with in gameplay similar to popular games of the same genre, like Overwatch.

Marvel Rivals has an array of characters to choose from. From well known heroes as Iron Man and Thor, to some lesser known heroes such as Squirrel Girl and Moon Knight. Each character can be categorized as a tank, damage, and support. I recommend trying different heroes and seeing what play style best suits you, especially if you haven’t played these types of games before. For example, I usually play tank characters, while playing I struggled playing as Venom because I kept getting killed by ranged characters like Squirrel Girl, but when I tried Moon Knight, I found my main character and won a lot more matches with him. You however, do need to have an internet connection, since this game is only multiplayer and doesn’t have a single player mode of any kind, But I will say the multiplayer is fun and very immersive.

This game has three different ways to play with your friends or other people. You would either protect a convoy or destroy it, depending on the team you are on, securing a specific area on the map, or to see which team can get the most kills. All these modes are played with teams of 6 and require teamwork in order to win. You cannot go off by yourself or else you will be picked off with ease. It’s also important to keep in mind which characters are on the team. Certain hero combinations can give you special skills/abilities ,if they are on the same team. For example, If you have Rocket Racoon and Groot on your team, you can have Rocket jump off Groot and shoot in the air a lot easier, making Rocket harder to hit while he guns you down. There are even special interactions between characters that add more personality to the game.

The game is all about teamwork and synergy between characters. Before the mission starts you get a chance to see what characters your teammates are playing as. This is your chance to plan out who you should play as. You want to make sure that you have a balance of tanks, supports and damage characters. If you see that the rest of the team has plenty of offensive characters, it’s best for you to choose a support character or else you will struggle and even lose the match. I recommend learning how to play  at least one character in each category. This game has a mode that allows you to practice with all the characters during actual matches, so feel free to practice and learn the ropes.

While playing this game, I’m always focused and making sure I don’t get flanked by the opposing team. The matches are exciting and you can easily get lost into the competition. I even celebrate every time my team wins and I’ll admit I get angry every time my team loses. As most competitive games are, it is easy to get a little too competitive, so always make sure to not take things too seriously.

The game plays well but there are some minor issues with the longevity of the game. The lack of a single player campaign makes it so that once people move on to the next big online game, this game will need to find ways to stay relevant. Not to mention if you are unable to get enough players in order to play a match, then you will not be able to even play the game. The biggest issue is that this game was released during the hype of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and at the moment fans are suffering from hero fatigue.

In conclusion, Marvel Rivals is a fun third person team shooter that allows you to play as your favorite hero or villain, and go head to head with friends or people around the world. This game really brings out my competitive side and always gets me pumped up for the next round. If this game had some sort of solo campaign, it would ensure its longevity.
