Zelda U Promises To Shake Up Established Formula

It’s no secret that most 3D Zelda game follows the formula set by Ocarina of Time: gather three items, plot event, gather another set of items, final boss, win; usually while exploring the same types of dungeons and collecting the same weapons and items. Despite the popularity of the games, there’s no denying that the experience can get samey. Zelda U plans to change that, says Series Producer Eiji Aonuma.

During an interview with Famitsu, reported by Kotaku,  Aonuma was asked about the development of Zelda U, which is still on track since its delay. He said that the game is “really taking shape” and that “things are progressing well”. Aonuma went on to say that he knows how much the series has been influenced by Ocarina of Time and promised that the next title will be different and that “something new” is the name of the game for Zelda U.

I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavor will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised.

What new things should you look forward to in Zelda U? According to another article by Kotaku, the next Zelda title might not feature the same puzzle mechanics fans have come to know, and the game will feature much larger open world.

As of right now there is no firm release date for Zelda U, just the vague promise of sometime in 2016. There are rumors that it will release alongside Nintendo’s new NX console. We’ll let you know as new information becomes available.
