Zelda: Breath of the Wild Alternate Ending Confirmed

In an interview with IGN Portugal, Eiji Aonuma, the producer and manager of The Legend of Zelda series, confirmed that the upcoming game will feature an alternate ending. It appears that there will be two endings available in the game: the normal ending, which the player can receive for just completing the game, and the alternate ending, which can be achieved by completing various, specific tasks. In Aonuma’s (translated) words, “There is an alternate ending if you meet certain criteria. If you do a few things, you may see a different ending.”

In this same interview, Aonuma also confirmed that Epona, Link’s horse who first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, will make an appearance in Breath of the Wild. It was not revealed how or where the player will see Epona. Aonuma says, “As for Epona, she’s in Breath of the Wild, but I do not want to reveal details about how to find her, or what that means.” Maybe seeing or unlocking or otherwise revealing Epona is one of the tasks necessary to view the alternate ending. Or maybe they’re completely unrelated.

Also in the interview, Aonuma discussed how to play a golf-like mini-game using a new item called Stasis Rune. “There is a new item called Stasis Rune. When you hit a stone, it moves, but by beating it repeatedly with Rune, it remains frozen in the same place, accumulating energy, and then projected after a while. Use this item to play a kind of Golf.”

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hits stores as a Nintendo Switch launch title on March 3. It will also be available for the Wii U and will be the last new game for the console.
