An advertisement promoting indie games on Xbox platforms drew harsh criticism for using an AI-generated art Friday morning according to Kotaku.
The initial post by Xbox’s indie developer program ID@Xbox wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, mainly asking people on Twitter to record their favorite indie games of 2023. The image coinciding with the post showed children sliding down a snowy hill with the Xbox logo at the center. That said, it didn’t take too long for people to realize the tell-tell signs of AI generation in the image.
Xbox using AI art to promote independent games is a new low pic.twitter.com/eznl8iOpdI

While Microsoft is at the forefront of the AI algorithm industry, thanks to its partnership with OpenAI on ChatGPT, the use of AI imagery in this post rubbed people the wrong way particularly due to the negative impact AI image generation is currently having on the written and visual arts communities.
Can’t believe ID@Xbox spends years working super hard, building up goodwill, funding games, building trust – genuine connection with creative, stubborn, idealistic independent developers – and then posts some horrifying AI art to pinch just a few dollars. Pay for art, please. https://t.co/k07oDqmQwH

Nothing says “we don’t care about indie developers” like using AI.
If you can’t hire an artist to do advertising, I highly doubt you’ll do it with independent developers https://t.co/wgFgIlIYUG

ID@Xbox’s post was taken down shortly after the outrage began, and is considered to be the latest in a growing trend of companies slowly incorporating AI Art in their work.
Xbox has yet to officially acknowledge the situation.
