According to Torrent Freak, source code for AMD’s Big Navi, and Arden GPU’s was found in hacked computer, and the culprit is now asking for money to stop the leaks. AMD develops computer processors and related technologies, and their Arden GPU is rumored to be the Xbox Series X 12 teraflop GPU. The company responded to the situation in a statement on their website.
AMD acknowledges the stolen graphics IP but say they are “not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products.” They issued two DMCA takedown notices after segments of the code was posted on Github. The hacker is now asking for $100 million for the code, and is threatening to release all the stolen data if the money isn’t received. AMD isn’t planning to comply with this, though admittedly they aren’t aware of any other possible IP the hacker has attained. The company is ” working closely with law enforcement officials and other experts as a part of an ongoing criminal investigation.”
You can actually read the full DMCA request via Github. The entire repository was taken down based on this request, and it even notes 4 known copies of the data. The hacker, apparently female, tells Torrent Freak that she doesn’t plan to correspond with AMD for fear that they will sue. She views the breach as a mistake on AMD’s part, making it seem as if the retrieval of the data was to easy. She says, “they weren’t even protected properly or even encrypted with anything which is just sad.”
AMD was made aware of the situation in back in December 2019 when contacted by the hacker, but they have stuck their guns when it comes to noncompliance. Whether this leak is detrimental to the rollout of the Xbox Series X is not exactly clear, though AMD assures it isn’t.
