It has been confirmed that Microsoft’s DRM monster, the Xbox One, will require players to be connected to the internet once every 24 hours, or once every hour when accessing games from a different console. Microsoft officially cleared up all the confusion regarding connectivity with a recent post on Xbox Wire, announcing that they would be always keeping an eye on gamers and people without internet would not be welcome in their perfect utopian future.
According to the announcement on Xbox Wire, “every Xbox One owner has broadband connection,” which basically means that if you don’t, Microsoft doesn’t want your business any more. It seems that Microsoft are trying to make themselves the Abercrombie and Fitch of the gaming industry, exclusionary, expensive and utterly awful. Homes without stable internet, troops stationed overseas and poor folk in general will be unable to use the Xbox One if they cannot connect to Microsoft, even for single player games. How will our Tommies unwind if they can’t play the latest Call of Duty?
With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.
The internet community has responded viciously to the announcement, lashing back with a torrent of humorous pictures. While on the aggregation website Reddit, users are accusing Microsoft of using drone accounts to post positive opinions of the Xbox One.
