With the proven success of the Nintendo Switch, the recent release of the PlayStation Portal, and even the Steam Deck that has sold very well, portable consoles and gaming on-the-go seems to be on the rise. However, there is a notable company that has yet to throw their hat into the ring. Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, sat down for an interview with Bloomberg to discuss the state of Xbox and their plans moving forward as a company.
Spencer first spoke on the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard that allowed for Xbox to put them in the mobile gaming market and has the company currently working on an online store for their mobile games. Spencer stated
“We definitely want to be in the market, and when we can find teams and technology and capability that add to what we’re trying to do in gaming at Microsoft, absolutely we will keep our heads up.
So a web store would mean somebody doesn’t have to go into the app store to try to install something, but you still have to have a way to find the store. If we’re just hoping, like, if we build it, they will come, I’m going to bet that doesn’t work.”
When discussing the possible future of portable Xbox console, Spencer said:
Longer term, I love us building devices and I think our team could do some real innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.
Recently, the gaming industry has seen many layoffs and Xbox is no different. After acquiring Activision Blizzard, Xbox laid off over 2,500 employees and closed 3 game design studios. Spencer says:
The Xbox business has never been more healthy. The business is performing right now, and I think that means a more healthy future for hardware and the games we build.
Spencer would close out the interview by saying, “I feel pretty good about where this industry is going. To reach new players, we need to be creative and adaptive of new business models, new devices, new ways of access. We’re not going to grow the market with $1,000 consoles.”
