The Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace will both no longer be supported by Microsoft for purchases of games or DLC content as of July 29th 2024. In preparation for that, Microsoft has put 60 games on sale. Microsoft says more to come on June 18 and July 16. The current 60 featured games are all currently at around seventy-five to ninety percent discount rates. The only exception to this is Worms™ Revolution, a 2012 artillery turn-based tactics game, which is only fifty percent off. Though, it seems that fifty percent puts the game at five dollars which might put this lower discount into perspective.
This first batch of games doesn’t have many titles that have sustained in the mainstream cultural consciousness. Some exceptions to this might be the 2013 Tomb Raider, the 2015 Rise of the Tomb Raider, Far Cry 4, and Just Dance 2014–2019 not including Just Dance 2017.
The 2013 Tomb Raider serves as a reboot of the series, changing Lara Croft’s origins for the second time. In this case, players are experiencing those origins in real-time, with Lara attempting to keep herself and her friends safe and escape the island terrorized by a malevolent cult.
Its 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider sees the return of Lara Croft, this time investigating Siberia for the legendary city of Kitzeh. Her adversaries this time consist of paramilitary corporation Trinity, attempting to reach Kitzeh and steal its secrets for themselves.
Far Cry 4 is a 2014 first-person shooter set in the open world of a fictional nation caught in a civil war between the military and a rebel movement. The protagonist becomes embroiled in this conflict, forcing their participation in the story.
The Just Dance series is a motion-based rhythm game where players dance along to choreography to popular songs. Named after the Lady Gaga song from 2008, Just Dance has become a perennial tradition, releasing a new game every year with a new song lineup. Just Dance 2017, the one not on sale, features classics like “Single Ladies” by Beyonce, “Into You” by Ariana Grande, and “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira. With a lineup like that, it’s no surprise 2017 hasn’t gone on sale yet.
These are just a part of the 60 titles now available for roughly five dollars each on the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace. Anyone worried about what happens to games players already own after July 29th, rest assured. Microsoft has confirmed that all previously purchased games will remain untouched by the store shutting down.
