Having originally been planned out some time in 2018, World War Z took inspiration from the 2013 movie of the same name. Having video games be follow-ups or inspired by movies isn’t all too unfamiliar, as Mad Max came out after Mad Max Fury Road in 2015. World War Z, as the name implies, contains loads of zombies, the creatures everyone loves to shoot the heads off of. And those who are fans of the World War Z franchise could have something else to fall in love with, especially after the news of the new of the movie franchise discontinuing.
Though when the game was announced, it was revealed that one of the regions that could be played in was Russia, creating a wintery landscape that hadn’t been explored in the 2013 movie. It was also hinted that there would be a 4-player co-op option online. But it looked like developers Saber Interactive wanted more to be had than just PvE, so they came up with a unique compromise:
PvPvZ. Player versus Player… versus Zombie. This unique online mode will pit two teams of 4 against each other, while also having to deal with the hordes and swarms of zombies coming at them. Teamwork is important, as one wrong move could cost you everything.
Thought it’s not just an online mode that requires teamwork and focus. There are five different modes that players can play in this PvPvZ
- Scavenge Raid: players race to secure resources across the map to win
- Vaccine Hunt: players must pick up and hold an object to earn point for the team.
- Swarm Deathmatch: Two teams go head to head in a bitter fight to the end
- Swarm Domination: Capture zones to earn points and win a team victory
- King of the Hill: Capture a single hill, then control it to earn victory points
Saber Interactive goes on to describe in the trailer description on the YouTube page of how their dynamic Swarm Engine allows them to create these massive zombie hordes to come after the teams and the objectives. These events occur at specific times as well, so whether they’re completely randomized or on a set schedule is not known. However, it does say that each of these modes goes into different locations: Moscow, New York, and Jerusalem are just a few to be named.
This fast-paced and hectic game mode comes with six different classes that each party member can choose from to take down the other team, survive the swarms of zombies, and live another day.
World War Z is set to come out some time in 2019 for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
