Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft franchise, started the movie based on their action game back in mid-January with the filming of Warcraft. It was announced today from director Duncan Jones on Twitter that today they had finished the filming of the movie. Warcraft will be coming to theaters on March 11, 2016, but the movie is not “done” yet.
Official tweet from Jones saying, “Final day on Warcraft now officially… wrapped.” Duncan Jones was part of the team on this project after Sam Raimi, the original director, had moved on in mid-2012. Jones has worked on other films in the sci-fi genre, which include Moon and Source Code.
Last July at Comic-Con International 2013, Blizzard had given a concept teaser, then later went on to explain at Blizzcon 2013 in November that they are focusing on the original story with Orcs vs. Humans. Legendary Pictures are the makers behind the movie Warcraft, and the studio head Thomas Tull mentions that “producers worked to include ‘big, universal themes’ to make the movie relatable to audiences beyond the people who have played World of Warcraft.”
The cast that is included in the Warcraft movie is ‘Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, X-Men: The Last Stand), Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Precious) and Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, Need for Speed).’
The film is being distributed by Universal Pictures and was going to be released in late 2015, but due to the release of Star Wars Episode VII being released on the same day, they delayed it to release on the new date of March 11, 2016. The film will actually need the about 20 months of post-production work, says Thomas Tull. The studio who will be leading the post-production work, to help bring the Orcs to life, will be the Award-winning Star Wars effects studio, Industrial Light & Magic. No trailers for Warcraft have been released yet, only one image from the set (below).
Related to World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be coming out with the next expansion called Warlords of Draenor, which will be coming out later this year on PC.
