Workers at SEGA of America have Successfully Unionized With The First Union Contract At Any Video Game Company In America

Working on a video game is a dream job for many, and the industry has never been more booming than it is today. These days there is a nigh endless demand for new experiences in an interactive digital front and a bevy of developers and publishers more than willing to push their supply. However, while it’s never been easier to seemingly get your foot in the door in this rapidly growing industry, it’s also been extremely hard to say indoors especially as of late. There has been a seemingly endless amount of industry layoffs dating back to at least mid last year, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. So it’s good news for the gaming world with SEGA of America announcing that their workers have unionized.

As shown in the above tweet, SEGA of America is the first major American company to unionize and get a contract, which should hopefully set an example for the rest of the industry when it comes to their standards regarding worker job security. A union is a very powerful thing to have at your back, especially during tumultuous times such as these.

Em Geiger, a localization editor at SEGA of America, expanded on this in an interview as reported by Polygon in their article covering the story:

There’s extra security knowing we have in place a system for bringing issues to the table, such as arguing just cause in a potential layoff. If the company wants to do something that the unit doesn’t like, we can grieve it, bargain over it, have our say before anything is finalized.

This has been a movement that has been going on since April of last year, and while the battle has been long it looks like workers’ rights won out in the end. Hopefully this spells good things for the future of the industry and the safety of the fine people in said industry who provide us with quality products.

Derek Lairmore: I've been playing video games and writing my entire life, so naturally I decided to combine the two passions. I love video games and video game culture, as far back as I can remember I've not only played them, I've actively participated in their communities. I hope my history in this hobby and my enthusiasm for writing helps me convey news to you accurately and succinctly.
